Living in Europe as an international student
Moving abroad to study can feel daunting at first, but most students settle in quickly. Here's what everyday life looks like for UK students in Europe.
In short
- Your course is taught fully in English
- Public transport is cheap, with student discounts
- A growing community of UK students
- Quick and affordable flights home
English is widely spoken
Your course is taught fully in English. In larger cities and student areas, most people, especially younger people, speak some English, which makes everyday things like shopping and getting around much easier.
Learning a few words of the local language still helps, and some universities include language classes.
Getting around is affordable
Public transport in most European cities is reliable and much cheaper than in the UK. Many cities offer student discounts on buses, trams and metros, and a monthly pass costs a fraction of UK prices.
A growing UK student community
More UK students choose to study in Europe every year, so you will meet others in the same position as you. We also introduce you to other students before you arrive.
Sports and the outdoors
Many universities have sports facilities and clubs, from football to basketball. Outside the city there is plenty to explore, from hiking in Georgia's Caucasus Mountains to Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.
Getting home
Budget airlines connect most European cities with the UK, and new routes such as the direct flights between the UK and Tbilisi make getting home for the holidays quicker.
Settling in takes time
It is normal to feel homesick in the first few months. Most students find it gets easier as they make friends and settle into a routine, and our support carries on after you arrive.
